Rick,

First time I visited your blog in a while. I COMPLETELY agree with you! The amount of "lowest common denominator" games disgusts me. But I've found a few gems.

This is an amazing opportunity for indie developers, precisely because the big guns aren't focused on "fun".

Oh man, I totally conveyed the wrong message. The last thing I want is for people to reskin Mob Wars. I want people who make innovative games be able to find an audience. It really bugs me that great, well-done games by guys like Large Animal don't reach a larger audience. After analyzing the platforms, I identified two viral game mechanics that get games in front of users. Unfortunately, game discovery on the socnets suck, users aren't able to find games on their own because the socnets don't provide a way to do it. Until that gets fixed, we have to bring the fun to the players. The viral mechanics I talked about hopefully will be able to help people get fun games in front of the socnet audience.

Nice idea! Public space gaming seems to be a neglected, high potential market. The concept of a "second place" described here makes the opportunity very clear.

Thanks for writing this. I wouldn't say I agree with everything written in it, but it was a good read.

Firstly, I'm okay with the delays in Google's Android. I know that it takes a long time to make a great product, and by taking the time to perfect Android before it hits the market, we'll get a product that's everything we're hoping for. Have faith in the people who brought you the world's best free email.

You're also being a bit of a downer by ragging on Google's attempt at corporate social responsibility. I for one wish I worked at Google. Great HR practices, personally love the mission statement and I respect all it's doing for the global community. We would all love an opportunity to work at their HQ too! :)

Congrats iQ212 on your latest game releases. I'd love to give it a try.

[...] Raph quotes a post by IQ212 who talks about the mass market of casual gamers based on the Mom example. While Raph concludes that “Core gamers are almost certainly going to have to adapt to a world in which a lot of developer attention is going towards a much broader array of titles than in the past.” IQ212 however actually had a positive intend with his Mom example. He writes: So as you consider the gameplay, theme, platform, difficulty level and marketing of your game, consider your mom as a mirror of the mass-market. Don’t ship without observing your mom playing your game cold, and seeing what she finds fun, rewarding and challenging. Doing so could expand your market reach, and the average American represents a potential market of 300 million people. [...]
