GDC was hardcore casual

The Games Developer’s Conference in San Jose last week ROCKED! The show was bigger and better than ever. I enjoyed the opportunity to talk up mobile, casual games and Mforma to friends, partners, peers, and competitors. Blame it on the lull between console generations, or the mass market dollars adding up, but casual games dominated the show. The industry is finally figuring out that when you target the largest audience, you can make the most money. Once relegated to dedicated web portals and cellphone pre-loads, Casual games are overflowing into the mass-market they were designed for. It seemed like half the floorspace was talking about casual games. Even the hottest party Wednesday night, the Minna Mingle (hosted by Jessica Tams and the Casual Games Assoc.), was all about the casual.
