Walt’s Revolution

I am a huge fan and student of Walt Disney (as in Walter Elias Disney), the man whose vision led to the media empire and company we know today.
I have read several biographies about him, and really like reading about the early days of Disneyland. Walt was focused on mass-market entertainment from the start. He promoted story, quality, technical innovation, and concern for the consumer in all his endeavors. As game makers, we can learn a lot about building and growing our forms of entertainment from Walt. He lead innovation in animation, motion pictures, amusement parks (he invented the themepark), television, urban design, and resort travel. I am not alone in my regard of Walt as Yoda. The picture in this post is part of a triptych I share with two game industry CEOs, each of us with one of the three hanging in our offices. The series of pics are of Walt and two craftsmen (Sargeant and Broggie) from his movie studio working on the steam locomotive for the Carolwood Pacific railroad. This “toy train” that ran around Walt’s LA home was the kernel of what would become Disneyland years later.
